SIBULAN, Negros Oriental – Binaril sa ulo at napatay ang kilalang American marine biologist na si Dr. Kent Carpenter matapos pasukin ng tatlong lalaki ang kanyang bahay sa Barangay Ajong nitong Linggo, July 12.
Ayon sa pulisya, nanonood ng telebisyon ang 73-anyos na scientist at kanyang 34-anyos na Filipina companion nang puwersahang pumasok ang mga suspek na nakasuot ng bonnet at pantakip sa mukha dakong 11:30 p.m.
Isa sa kanila ang may dalang handgun at bumaril kay Carpenter, na namatay sa lugar.
Iniulat din ng pulisya na umano’y seksuwal na inabuso ng mga salarin ang kanyang companion. Nasa pangangalaga siya ng Women and Children Protection Desk at sumasailalim sa medical at forensic examination. Hindi inilantad ang kanyang pangalan.
“They forcefully entered the house, was shot, assaulted the female and then robbed their things,” pahayag ni Police Capt. Stephen Jaynard Polinar, tagapagsalita ng Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office (NORPPO).
Magulo umano ang bahay nang dumating ang mga imbestigador. Patuloy ang inventory para matukoy ang mga gamit na tinangay.
Wala pang nahuhuli sa tatlong suspek.
Sa briefing nitong Martes, sinabi ng pulisya na posibleng robbery ang dahilan dahil may mga gamit umanong kinuha. Hindi rin inaalis ang ibang motibo, kabilang ang mga posibleng kaugnayan sa trabaho at personal na buhay ni Carpenter.
“We are yet to establish assumptions and presumptions,” ani Polinar.
Bumuo ang Philippine National Police (PNP) ng Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) Carpenter. Kabilang dito ang police investigators, Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), Provincial Anti-Cybercrime Team, Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) at iba pang law enforcement units.
Sinabi ng Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) na nagsasagawa ang mga imbestigador ng “backtracking and forward tracking operations, including the review of possible CCTV footage, witness interviews, intelligence validation, and reconstruction of the suspects’ movements before and after the incident.”
“We strongly condemn this senseless act of violence. I have directed our investigators to exhaust all legal means to identify and apprehend those responsible at the soonest possible time,” pahayag ni PRO-NIR Director PBGen. Romano Cardiño.
“We assure the victim’s family, the community, and our foreign visitors that this case is being treated with utmost urgency, and no effort will be spared until justice is served,” dagdag niya.
Nagsasagawa rin ng hot pursuit operation ang pulisya. Ipinaalam na sa pamilya ni Carpenter sa United States at sa United States Embassy in the Philippines ang kanyang pagkamatay.
Si Carpenter ay isang tanyag na ichthyologist, o zoologist na nag-aaral ng mga isda. Mahigit 50 taon niyang pinag-aralan ang Philippine marine fishes mula pa noong 1975.
Adjunct professor siya sa Institute of Environmental and Marine Sciences (IEMS) ng Silliman University sa Dumaguete City. Nakipagtulungan din siya sa Angelo King Center for Research and Environmental Management (SUAKCREM).
Kabilang si Carpenter sa mga may-akda ng landmark 2005 study na kumilala sa Verde Island Passage bilang “center of marine shore fish biodiversity.” Nagsulong din siya na maitalaga ang lugar bilang World Heritage Site.
Nagluksa at nanawagan ng hustisya ang mga Filipino scientist, academic institution at conservation group.
“Since 2018, Kent gave his time freely to the park, driven by a love for the reef. He was a brilliant scientist who helped us truly understand what we are protecting,” pahayag ng Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park and World Heritage Site. /Bistado
