Magko-convene ang Senado bilang impeachment court sa May 18, Lunes, 3 p.m. para sa trial ni Vice President Sara Duterte, ayon kay Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano.
Sa liham kay House Speaker Faustino Dy III, sinabi ni Cayetano na kinuha na ng Senado ang “proper order” ng impeachment complaint at uusad ang proseso alinsunod sa Constitution at Senate impeachment rules.
“The Secretariat has been directed to include the Articles of Impeachment in the Calendar for Ordinary Business for referral to the Impeachment Court, which shall be convened on 18 May 2026, 3 p.m., or at the possible soonest time,” saad ng liham.
Sinabi ni Cayetano na walang nakikitang dahilan ang Senate majority bloc para baguhin ang umiiral na impeachment rules, dahil maaari itong magdulot ng delay kapag kailangan pang ilathala ang revised rules.
“If everyone agrees on the rule, I do not see any reason why hindi kami makapag-convene sa Monday (we cannot convene on Monday),” ani Cayetano.
Sa prosesong inilatag niya, unang magko-convene ang senators bilang impeachment court. Pagkatapos, manunumpa si Cayetano bilang presiding officer, susundan ng panunumpa ng 23 senator-judges. Maglalabas din ang Senado ng summons kay Duterte.
Sinabi ni Cayetano na naghahanda na ang Senate leadership ng draft calendar batay sa constitutional at procedural timelines, at hindi ito magiging “discretionary.”
“So walang delay ’yun. Kung ano na sa rules, kung ano nasa Constitution ’yun (There will be no delay. We will follow what is in the rules and the Constitution),” sabi ni Cayetano.
Nilinaw niya na ang haba ng trial proper ay nakadepende pa rin sa dami ng witnesses at presentation of evidence ng magkabilang panig.
“You cannot stop both sides from presenting the number of witnesses na gusto nilang sabihin (they want to present),” ani Cayetano.
Sinabi rin niya na kailangang balansehin ng Senado ang impeachment proceedings at legislative work dahil may mga national concerns at pending measures na kailangan pa ring aksyunan ng Congress.
Tinanggap naman ni impeachment prosecutor at House Committee on Public Accounts Chairperson Terry Ridon ang anunsyo ng Senate President.
“Nagpapasalamat po ang House Prosecution Panel sa pagbanggit po ni Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano na iko-convene na po ang Senate Impeachment Court laban kay Vice President Sara Duterte sa darating na May 18, 2026, Lunes at 3PM,” sabi ni Ridon.
“Maaasahan din po na ‘yon pong kabuuan ng House Prosecution Panel ay magpupunta rin po dito po sa araw na ito para saksihan ‘yon pong pag-convene ng Senate Impeachment Court,” dagdag niya.
Pormal na na-transmit ng House ang Articles of Impeachment sa Senado noong Wednesday night, dalawang araw matapos bumoto ang 257 lawmakers para i-impeach si Duterte. May 25 na bumoto kontra at siyam ang nag-abstain.
Si Ridon ay kabilang sa 11 lawmakers na inihalal ng House noong May 12 bilang prosecution panel. Kasama niya sina Reps. Joel Chua, Leila de Lima, Gerville “Jinky Bitrics” Luistro, Chel Diokno, Ysabel Maria Zamora, Lordan Suan, Jonathan Keith Flores, Lorenz Defensor, Rodge Gutierrez, at Kaka Bag-ao.
Ang impeachment case laban kay Duterte ay nakatuon sa alleged misuse ng P612.5 million confidential funds, unexplained wealth, bribery involving DepEd officials, at grave threats laban kina President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, at former Speaker Martin Romualdez. /Bistado
