DUMAGUETE CITY – Nanawagan ang government at cultural heritage officials ng sama-samang pagkilos para protektahan at pangalagaan ang bagong restore na Dumaguete Bell Tower, isa sa pinakamahalagang historical landmarks ng lungsod.
Ginawa ang panawagan sa formal turnover ng bell tower sa Diocese of Dumaguete nitong Lunes ng gabi, matapos ang halos dalawang taong restoration na pinondohan ng P15 million mula sa National Museum of the Philippines (NMP).
Kasabay ng turnover ang unveiling ng bronze marker na kumikilala sa istruktura bilang Important Cultural Property.
Ayon kay National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) Deputy Executive Director Bernan Joseph Corpuz, kailangang bantayan ang bell tower para sa susunod na henerasyon sa pamamagitan ng pagtutulungan ng Simbahan, local government, heritage advocates, stakeholders, at komunidad.
Sinabi niyang ipinakita ng Dumaguete ang matibay na commitment sa pangangalaga ng cultural heritage nito. Diin niya, hindi lamang kayamanan ng lungsod ang bell tower, kundi bahagi rin ng pamana ng bansa.
“Dumaguete has distinguished itself as a place that values its culture and history, not only through the preservation of significant cultural artifacts and heritage structures, but also through the commitment of its people to understanding and passing on the stories these treasures carry,” sabi ni Corpuz.
Dagdag niya, makatutulong din ang landmark sa pagpapalakas ng cultural tourism ng Dumaguete at sa socio-economic development nito.
Sa kanyang acceptance speech, sinabi ni Bishop Julito Cortes ng Diocese of Dumaguete na ang restoration ng edifice “is not simply the repair of stone and structure but the careful guiding of identity and the unfolding history of our people.”
Aniya, ang bell tower ay nagsilbing saksi sa maraming henerasyon ng Dumagueteños at nananatiling simbolo ng faith at community.
Ayon kay NMP Deputy Director General Arvin Manuel Galon, ang halos 200-taong-gulang na istruktura ang tanging natitirang watchtower mula sa tatlong dating nakatayo sa Dumaguete noong Spanish colonial period.
Itinayo noong 1811, ang bell tower ang pinakamatandang surviving structure sa lungsod. Orihinal itong nagsilbi bilang watchtower at bell tower para sa kalapit na cathedral, at tumulong sa pagprotekta sa coastal communities laban sa raiders noong Spanish colonial period.
Samantala, sinabi ni Msgr. Julius Perpetuo Heruela, chairperson ng Diocesan Commission on Church Cultural Heritage, na bubuo ang Diocese of Dumaguete at city government ng management at conservation guidelines para sa bell tower sa pamamagitan ng memorandum of agreement.
Bahagi rin ng turnover ceremony ang paglagda sa certificate of turnover ng mga kinatawan ng NMP, NCCA, diocese, at city government. /Bistado
