Kampeon ang lungsod ng Sagay sa Negros Occidental sa Girls’ 14-Under division ng 2026 PONY International Softball World Series na ginanap sa Texas, Estados Unidos noong Lunes (oras sa Pilipinas).
Winalis ng mga Negrense ang koponan ng Mexico na RXII Kino Team sa finals upang masungkit ang kampeonato matapos magtapos sa ikaapat na puwesto noong nakaraang taon.
“Rising above more than 30 teams, our young athletes battled through 11 games from the elimination round to the championship,” ani Sagay City Officer-in-Charge/Schools Division Superintendent Dannie Clark Uguil sa isang Facebook post.
Ayon kay Uguil, ang panalo ng mga Negrense ay sumasalamin sa lakas ng pagtutulungan, disiplina, katatagan at hindi matatawarang determinasyon habang binabati niya ang mga manlalaro, coach, magulang, at mga sumuporta sa makasaysayang tagumpay.
Sa isang pahayag, pinuri ni Department of Education (DepEd) – Negros Island Region Director Ramir Uytico ang ipinakitang pagganap ng koponan mula sa Sagay City National High School.
“This achievement is a testament to the strength of sports development across the region,” dagdag nya.
Pinapurihan din ni Sagay City Mayor Leo Rafael Cueva ang mga manlalaro, coach, magulang at mga tagasuporta ng Team Sagay softbelles sa pagdadala ng diwang Sagaynon nang may pagmamalaki sa pandaigdigang torneo.
“Our athletes continue to prove that heart, preparation, and unity can compete with anyone in the world. Win or lose, you have already inspired every Sagaynon by showing what dedication and teamwork can achieve,” ani Cueva.
Noong 2024, ang Pilipinas-Negros Occidental team ay nag-uwi rin ng kampeonato sa Girls’ 16 Under division sa parehong lugar. Karamihan sa mga manlalaro ay mula rin sa Sagay.
Noong nakaraang taon, nagtapos ang Team Philippines mula sa Sagay pa rin sa ikatlong pwesto sa Girls’ 16 Under.
