Eksaktong isang linggo matapos malunod ang mga manlalaro na sina Rene Baterbonia at Divine Adili, pormal nang nagbitiw sina coach Tab Baldwin at manager Epok Quimpo ng Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) men’s basketball team.
Hunyo 8 nang mamatay sina Baterbonia, 18, at Nigerian na si Adili, 21, habang nasa teambuilding sa Dipaculao, Aurora. Ayon sa mga ulat, hinigop ng malakas na agos ang dalawa.
Inanunsyo ni Fr. Bobby Yap, Fr. Roberto Yap, SJ, presidente ng ADMU, ang kaganapan sa isang press conference sa Quezon City nitong Lunes.
“We thank them for the years of service to the Blue Eagles, but as we enter a period of deep institutional review, a change in leadership is necessary to ensure the full integrity of our sports programs and safety protocols governing them. We must look inward, examine our systems, and rebuild the structures of athletic programs so that our fields and playing courts remain places where dreams are nurtured, not broken,” ani Yap.
Humingi rin siya ng paumanhin sa mga pamilya ng mga nasawing manlalaro, na ayon sa kanya ay nagdulot ng matinding dalamhati sa komunidad.
“When a young man dies, we mourn both the loss of life and the shattering of dreams. We mourn the potential that won’t come true,” pagpapatuloy ni Yap, “To the families of Rene and Divine, we see you. We acknowledge the unbearable pain of your mourning. We know that the grief you carry right now is compounded, and the anger is entirely natural, justified, and deeply human. On behalf of Ateneo De Manila University, I’m here to say simply and directly, we are truly deeply sorry.”
Gayunman, nilinaw ni Yap na agad na naabisuhan ang pamilya Baterbonia tungkol sa insidente, taliwas sa pahayag ng inang si Rovelyn, na hindi sila nabigyan ng agarang abiso.
“There was somebody from Ateneo who spoke to her on the very night it happened,” ani Yap.
Wala pang desisyon ang ADMU kung lalahok o hindi sa nalalapit na season ng University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 89, na magsisimula sa Setyembre 12.
“Regarding the UAAP, wala pa kaming desisyon,” dagdag ni Yap.
Si Baldwin, 68, ay unang nag-coach sa Blue Eagles noong 2016 at naghatid ng apat na kampeonato sa UAAP, kabilang ang tatlong magkakasunod 2017 hanggang 2019. Napag-kampeon din niya ang Ateneo ng dalawang beses sa Philippine Collegiate Champions League (2018 at 2019).
Samantala, naging myembro si Quimpo ng men’s basketball team noon pang 2002.
Mula sa Metro Manila, ibinurol si Baterbonia sa Ateneo de Davao University sa Davao City, kung saan sya nagtapos ng high school, noong Hunyo 12 hanggang 15. Kahapon ng umaga, dinala na ang katawan nya sa sinilangang bayan na Talacogon sa Agusan del Sur.
Si Adili naman ay ililipad sa Nigeria ngunit sasa-ilalim muna sa awtopsiya sa hiling na rin ng pamilya.
