QUEZON CITY – Nasa 900 police officers ang ikinalat sa People Power Monument sa EDSA nitong Martes matapos ang tila biglaang kilos-protesta ng isang religious group na nagdulot ng mabigat na trapik sa lugar.
Ayon sa Philippine National Police (PNP), mahigpit na mino-monitor ni PNP Chief, Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., at ng kanyang command group ang sitwasyon habang tumatanggap ng real-time updates mula sa field commanders.
Sinabi ng PNP na nakatutok si Nartatez para “oversee police operations to ensure public safety, maintain the orderly flow of traffic, and keep the situation peaceful while respecting the rights of those involved.”
Ayon kay National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) director Maj. Gen. Anthony Aberin, nasa 8,000 ang latest crowd estimate. Batay aniya sa dialogue ng pulisya sa organizers, lahat ng participants ay miyembro ng Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC).
“We asked them earlier and as far as I know, they are members of the INC. There are no other groups present,” sabi ni Aberin.
Nagbara ang mga kalsada dahil sa assembly, lalo na sa northbound lanes ng EDSA at White Plains area.
Ayon kay Aberin, agad nagdagdag ng police personnel sa lugar habang dumarami ang protesters.
“We asked the organizers to keep the roads cleared and they agreed,” sabi ng NCRPO chief.
Hindi agad malinaw ang layunin ng protesta. Pero binaha ng haka-haka ang social media na posibleng kaugnay ito ng announcement ng Ombudsman nitong Lunes na maaaring sampahan ng plunder case si Sen. Rodante Marcoleta.
Iniimbestigahan ng Office of the Ombudsman si Marcoleta kaugnay ng umano’y admission na tumanggap siya ng P75 million mula kay former lawmaker Mike Defensor at dalawa pang campaign donors, na naiulat na hindi naisama sa kanyang statement of assets, liabilities, and net worth as of June 30, 2025.
Ayon kay Aberin, walang permit ang protesters at protocol sana ang dispersal ng rally. Pero dahil sa laki ng crowd, maaari aniyang mauwi sa confrontation ang pagtatangkang dispersal.
“We will be observing maximum tolerance and we will be asking them to keep the roads clear for traffic,” sabi niya.
“They did not give specific time as to what time they will stay but we assure the public that police will be here for as long as they are here,” dagdag ni Aberin.
Pinayuhan ni Aberin ang motorists na karaniwang dumadaan sa EDSA na gumamit ng alternative routes.
Samantala, nanawagan ang Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) sa mga rally participants at stakeholders na gamitin nang responsable ang kanilang karapatan, sundin ang rule of law, at makipagtulungan sa mga awtoridad habang nagpapatuloy ang aktibidad.
“The Department remains committed to protecting public safety while upholding the constitutional freedoms of every Filipino,” ayon sa DILG.
Inatasan din ng DILG ang PNP na “exercise maximum tolerance and implement appropriate security and traffic management measures to help ensure that the activity remains peaceful, orderly, and safe for all.” /Bistado
